Narrabeen sits between the ocean and Narrabeen Lagoon, with older cottages, holiday-era homes, apartment blocks and newer rebuilds on mostly flat, sandy ground. Living near that much water shapes how drains behave. Beaches Blocked Drains connects Narrabeen residents with licensed local drain plumbers.
Why Narrabeen drains block
Low, flat ground. Much of Narrabeen is only a little above the lagoon and the sea. Pipes laid on flat ground have little fall, and older lines that have sagged hold water and catch waste.
Sand. Sandy soil gets into gullies, outdoor showers and stormwater pits, and through any cracked joint into the pipe.
High groundwater. When the ground is saturated, water can enter cracked sewer pipes and stormwater has nowhere to soak away.
Older pipework. Many original cottages still run earthenware sewer lines, and roots from garden trees and Norfolk pines find the joints.
Flooding. Parts of Narrabeen are flood-affected when the lagoon rises in heavy rain. During those events, drains may back up because the water has nowhere to go.
How it gets fixed
A CCTV drain camera shows sand, roots, sags and cracks. Jet blasting is the method that properly clears sand and silt from a flat line. Where a section is cracked, pipe relining seals it from inside. A deeply sagged section may need re-laying, and the camera footage shows which.
What it costs in Narrabeen
A standard clear typically runs $150 to $400. A combined camera and jetting job typically runs $350 to $900. Root clearing typically runs $250 to $600. You get the price before work starts.
If sewage or stormwater is rising, see emergency blocked drains.
Frequently asked questions
Our drains are slow every time it rains heavily. Why?
On low ground, high groundwater and a full stormwater system leave little capacity. If a line is also partly blocked, it shows up first in rain. A camera inspection finds any blockage or cracked joint.
Can a plumber fix drains during a lagoon flood?
When the lagoon is high, the problem may be the flood rather than a blockage. Once water levels drop, a plumber can check and clear the lines. In a flood, follow advice from emergency services first.
Does sand damage pipes?
Sand does not usually damage a sound pipe, but it builds up and causes blockages. Where sand is getting in, a cracked joint is often the entry point.
