Freshwater is one of the older parts of the Beaches, and it shows in the housing: weatherboard and fibro cottages, Federation and interwar homes, and modern rebuilds squeezed in between them on the slopes above the beach. Original drainage is common under those older homes. Beaches Blocked Drains connects Freshwater residents with licensed local drain plumbers.
Why Freshwater drains block
Older cottages are the heart of it. Many still run earthenware clay sewer pipe laid generations ago, with joints that have opened through decades of ground movement. Roots from gardens and street trees move in, and a line that drained fine for years starts blocking every few months.
Sand is the beach-side factor. Outdoor showers, sandy feet and boards rinsed in the yard all send sand into gullies and floor wastes. Where it gets into a cracked line, it settles and catches waste.
Rebuilds bring their own issue. A new home or extension often connects to the old private sewer somewhere along the block, and the junction between new PVC and old clay is a common weak point.
How it gets fixed
The plumbers we refer usually start with a CCTV drain camera to see whether the problem is roots, sand or a broken section. Jet blasting clears roots and flushes sand out. If the old pipe is cracked, pipe relining can seal it from inside, which matters on Freshwater's tight, sloping blocks where digging is hard.
What it costs
A standard clear typically runs $150 to $400. Tree roots in drains clearing typically runs $250 to $600. Relining a broken section typically starts around $3,000. You get a price before work starts.
Frequently asked questions
Our cottage drains keep blocking. Is the pipe failing?
If a drain blocks repeatedly, the pipe usually has roots or damage. A camera inspection shows which, and whether a clear is enough or the section needs relining.
Is it worth an inspection before buying an older Freshwater home?
Yes for most older cottages. A pre-purchase camera inspection is a small cost compared with relining after you move in.
How do I keep sand out of the outdoor shower drain?
Use a fine grate, rinse feet on grass where you can, and have the gully cleared when it slows. Jetting removes built-up sand properly.
